For a second, I wasn’t sure what Mona meant by ‘It’s Salma,’ or why she was so excited. The moment I realized what she meant, my eyes widened, and my mouth parted as I gasped, “Salma?”

Mona nodded, and her grin grew bigger. I quickly ran out the door, shock consuming me. I needed to see her, and I needed to see her right now. I couldn’t believe it.

“Your Highness?” I heard Mo’taz calling after me as I ran to the elevator.

“I’m headed to the stables. Inform Officer Fawaz,” I directed and rushed into the elevator. The two-minute journey to the ground floor felt like hours, and the quick car ride to the stables felt like years. I couldn’t get to the stables fast enough.

Once I reached my destination, I found a few of the stable hands already waiting for me. “Where’s she?” I asked on my way to the stalls.

“She’s in the back garden, Your Highness. We didn’t go near her per your previous command,” the stable hand, Kamal, declared as he trailed after me.

“Good call,” I said. Making my way to the garden, I wondered if it was really her. I couldn’t believe the news and started thinking there might be a mistake. It had been over two months since I let her go.

As I rounded the corner to the garden, the brown horse came to view, and I gasped, “God is the greatest!” It was really Salma. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

The young horse saw me approach, and I expected that she’d back away like she always did, but she stayed put. It seemed like she was waiting for me. My ribs ached as I remembered the injury I sustained from my last encounter with her a couple of months ago. Pain or not, I was too stubborn to stay away. I had to get closer.

“Salma!” I gushed, approaching her slowly, giving her time to adjust to my presence. When she kept still, I moved closer.

“You’re back!” I said more to myself as I was still not believing she came back to me after all this time. She looked fine. She didn’t look as skinny as she was when I let her go. It meant she was doing well on her own, she wasn’t starving, she didn’t come back searching for food or water. She came back for me.

“God is the greatest!” I whispered as my hand touched her soft chestnut coat. I was afraid she would be skittish and move away, but she allowed me close. My heart was so full, and the first thought that played on my mind was how I couldn’t wait to go back home and tell Marie about this.

“Oh, shit!” I said under my breath, careful not to scare Salma, but in all truth—I wanted to shout at the top of my lungs as I realized how dumb I was.

I left Marie, and the wing as fast as I could when I heard Salma’s name. I gave her no explanation, and I didn’t even ask if she was okay with me leaving her alone.
